At the Mystical Mendota Café...

... say what you will.

The video is intended mainly as audio. Lake Mendota was emitting unearthly sounds today. Whatever was going on with the ice today was just fantastic.

Professor, I saw your comment from early this morning regarding my comment form last night and you're right, I was being a little bit snide. My sincere apologies.

Which White House advisor would not only write the President an order, but shout it at him in all caps?

The MSM did not boggle at this, since they feel someone should, but imagine their reaction if a story like this came out about Obama?

Lived on the lake near Tenney Park for a bitnin the 90s.

The noises the lake made when freezing and thawing plus the booms/cracks as it froze or during super cold spells were something new to me .... despite growing up here.

There are some really beautiful sounds the lake makes.

I recall a very cold winter back in the 60's when the ice on New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee was at least three feet thick. Ice fishermen used to drive their cars out onto it.

Come spring the ice occasionally split into huge sections. When it did it sounded like a nearby lightning strike, the "thunder' reverberating along the hills surrounding the lake.

Ka-BOOOOOOOOOOooooooooom!!

Way cool.

I love the sounds that frozen lakes make. I couldn't hear what was going on in this video over my laptop speakers, but the effect was quite clear using my headphones. Thanks for sharing.

That sound portends the death of the Left.
It's about time.

The lake sirens are singing, “Darrrrrrrel, come in, the water is fine....”.

Sounds like underwater magma rising to me.

Eagles Mere Lake, in NE Pennsylvania, makes some similar sounds most years. It's a much smaller lake, a mile across, and as the ice melts along the shores, the rest of the ice disk will quiver with wind and waves.

Speaking of ice fishing, Helen Smith is baiting Ann on Instapundit, pushing "Wyoming Dungaree Cargo Shorts" for men. Will Ann rise to the occasion?

Suppose, for example, you regularly watch a local TV weatherman forecast the weather for your area. Would you need a degree in meteorology in order to decide for yourself how reliable, or unreliable, the weatherman’s forecasts are? Warnings have been issued for many decades now regarding catastrophic climate change that forecasted certain trends or occurrences that we should already have witnessed. Yet such predictions have turned out to be very, very wrong. This was certainly the case with the alarmist predictions of the 1960s and ’70s that man’s activities on Earth were causing a catastrophic cooling trend that would bring on another ice age. And it is also the case with the more recent claims about catastrophic global warming. What follows is a very brief review of these predictions compared to what actually happened.

Also the story about McCabe launching a FBI investigation of Jeff Sessions. How in the world can the Deputy Director of the FBI (this is not Mueller's team) launch an investigation of the Attorney General, his boss two levels above him? What kind of a circus are they running at the DoJ?

And would not firing McCabe be up to his boss, Director Wray, rather than the Attorney General? I can see the A.G. "signing off" on the firing, whatever that means, but surely the actual act would be the Director's to make?

Something is not right about all this verbiage.

The British Columbia SPCA could pride itself in a job well done.

The Duncan branch had rescued 57 Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs from a hoarding situation. The Nanaimo branch nursed the pigs back to health. And in January, the Cowichan & District branch found a home for one of them, 3-year-old Molly.

But only weeks later, on Feb. 16, they were stunned to learn that instead of enjoying her new life with a caring family, Molly had been slaughtered by her owners and served for dinner.

"First reaction I'd say was shock. Heartbreak. You know, all the animals that come through our care or branches we get attached to," Nanaimo SPCA branch manager Leon Davis told CBC News.

In a previous post, I explained the purpose of the universe and the meaning of life on earth. I'm glad that this offered assistance and guidance to the many confused souls who thanked me so profusely. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

Really? You posted the meaning of life? The actual meaning? I’ve been searching for my entire life. Which post is it?

So I'm talking with a pretty girl in a bar. And her name is Jeri. And I say, "Like Jerry Hall." And she says, "Who?"

And I say, "Mick Jagger's girlfriend. Or wife, maybe, I don't remember."

And she says, "Who is Mick Jagger?"

I was on the lakeshore path one spring day and the lake sounded like a ginormous cocktail party, with all the tinkling ice.

Sounds of making and breaking hydrogen bonding. Water is pretty special in that regard.

A single hydrogen bond is weak but lake's surface worth is strong.

There's a beautiful coin design at my link. Not quite as gorgeous as a Saint-Gaudens $20 piece, but close to it.

What do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?

Original Mike, you need to read Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

You'll then understand both "42," and "What do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?".

Well, maybe not actually understand, but at least you'll know the reference.

Michael Barone: Women against free speech?

Majorities of students polled said they supported both free speech and “inclusion and diversity.” When asked which was more important, 53 percent said inclusion and diversity and only 46 percent said free speech.

What I found most striking — the numbers that stood out for me — was the difference between men and women. Among men, 61 percent favored free speech. But only 35 percent of women did so. That’s a result I certainly hadn’t expected.

That number is of particular concern, because women are now a majority of college and university students. They appear to be a preponderance of the campus administrators who enforce schools’ speech and sexual assault codes, at a time when administrators outnumber teachers in higher education. . . . Female students’ willingness to subordinate free speech to political values is disturbing, in a time when habits of mind and behavior developed on campus tend to leach out to the larger society.

It should have been obvious - letting women, who strongly tend towards conformity, empathy, and speech suppression, as compared to men, gain a majority in the universities, inevitably resulted in the destruction of free speech there. Independence is a male trait, while conformity and empathy for everyone are female traits. This is just the way of the world - the men tend to be the explorers, the inventors, the entrepreneurs, etc, while the women the community builders. Academic free speech is a direct result of academia being, at one time, almost completely male. Now that it is majority female, we can expect to see it die, and with that, much of the traditional vigor of the university. Sad. Because the universities used to be a driving force behind intellectual and scientific advancement. And inevitable because women, as a group, tend to be much more willing to put individual feelings and small group cohesion ahead of the good of the country, as compared to men. Does anyone believe here that a country founded by women writing a constitution would have included our Bill of Rights? Which was, of course, designed to protect minorities from the majority. That is something that males worry about, while females worry more about conforming to the majority.

I understood the “42” reference, but not the 6x9. It’s been on my “to read” list for decades. One of these years ...
